Letter from CPEberly to Denver Park, Apr?1941

Postmarked: Envelope missing.

It is believed this letter was written to Denver but was never mailed because Denver died in early April 1941.

Hi Denver,

It's so hot here today.  We have all the doors and windows open, it's sure wonderful out here in the spring, trees are all in blossom & have leaves.  Lilacs are ready to bloom.  Lot of flowers are done blooming but lots are still blooming or will bloom.  Tulips are blooming.

Some nights I work till 4:00 o'clock & it's five when I get to bed, & before I can get to sleep the birds are singing and sun is shining, but I sleep good anyway.

It's a legend out here that if a person live in Oregon 1 year he'll never like the east again, I don't know, Oregon is pretty nice & so is Pa.

I got another advance in jobs at the “tik tok” I'm a “car hopper” now.  I started as “Buss Boy” got raised to “Captain” & raised again to “Car Hopper” & the boss says he is going to “counter man” two nite a week.

The Tik Tok, The best all night affaire around Portland.  The Drive-in services can take care of 79 cars at once & in the inside they can seat a great many people at counter & tables. 

They have three 'chefs” working all the time.  A car hopper takes the orders from the outside customers.  The “captains” deliver the orders & the “Buss Boys” clean the trays off.

The car hoppers get the tips.  The first nite I worked as car Hopper, I got $1.30 in tips & I only worked about the last 2 or 3 hours of the eve.  The hours before I was raised to car hopper I had been captaining.  Tips runs as high as 6 bits or sometimes a dollar. & as low as 10 cents occasionally $0.05, mostly $0.15-0.25.

My uniform cost me $10.00.  The customers are all pretty high class & every thing on the menus is high priced.  I spent 6 solid hours learning the menu & several more hours rehearsing it, that's why I got the job as “Car Hopper”.  Today is payday.  My uniform consists of a yellow Sweater, green Trousers with a gold stripe, a white shirt & green bow tie & a (hat or cap or something).

Tell Mom & pop not to write till I give them a new address, Wible have sold their home & are moving.
